Five Most Annoying Poker Players
Wednesday March 10th 2010, 11:19 am

For your enjoyment, I have compiled a list of the top 5 most annoying people at a poker table, based on years of playing in poker casinos, card rooms, home games and online: 5. 5.Guy who insists on getting a massage at the poker table in a casino. Look, I know it’s tempting to get a free massage, but it’s not like you just came back from eight hours of performing surgery. I love poker, but it’s not a sport and not really a strenuous activity. It involves sitting and occasionally talking. There’s really not even much moving going on 6. 4. Guy who insists on eating while sitting at the poker table. Like a free massage, I know free food is hard to turn down (most casinos will give you a free burger or sandwich if you’ve been playing for several hours). But it’s absolutely disgusting to have a guy eating a burger and fries, with meat juices and ketchup all over his hands, handling the cards. You know those same cards get dealt to everyone else at the table, right? At least get up and eat the burger somewhere away from the rest of us. 7. 3. Guy who talks about how he won a huge amount of money at a tournament that morning. This is almost invariably always the same guy who is losing a bunch of chips at the table, so he has to make up some story to make himself feel better. Listen, if you really won 5 grand in the tournament this morning, why are you sitting at a $1-$2 limit table now? 8. 2. Guy whose girlfriend/wife comes to the table every five minutes to ask when he’s leaving. The girlfriend/wife always give a dirty look when the guy replies for the fifth consecutive time, “Just one more hand, honey.” Look, buddy, you’ve been playing for 8 hours, you have some fun, just go home. There’s nothing worse than a pissed-off wife. Trust me, I know. 9. 1. Guy who complains about bad beats. You had to know he was number one. If you play poker long enough, you will have many bad beats. EVERYONE has bad beats. Yet this person sits there and complains about his horrible luck, as if he’s the only person in the history of poker to ever suffer a bad beat. Give it a rest already.

Do You Tweet at Your Poker Game?
Tuesday February 09th 2010, 10:08 am
Filed under: Great Fun, Internet Gambling, World Of Games

When I learned to play online poker, I was cautioned to be careful about how I presented myself to the other players. I was told that a twitch of an eye or a nervous fidget of my hands could reveal the value of my hand to people who had no business knowing it. If I was so incautious as to reveal anything, the onus was on me for a poor game and a lighter wallet. This kind of advice was from a different generation. It was from a generation before Twitter.

As more and more people turn to Twitter for their social fix, online poker players are faced with the need to define how Twitter fits into a poker game. Are you, for example, allowed to Tweet how you feel about the cards even though this could alter the outcome of the game? Should Tweets be considered poker tells, just like an intake of breath or a nervous shake? One solution would be to consider in game Tweeting as the same sort of this as the chat function at an online poker game. This would mean that there are general rules and advice about the proper way to behave. Would such control be against the very ideas of freedom of personal expression Twitter is supposed to uphold? These are questions that poker players will need to find the answers for in the future.

Hand Analysis: 5-8

If you’re at a poker table where the guys are coming after you with 5 8, you’re likely either going to have a great session, or a rough one. A tables where the opponents are loose enough to open up to double gapped connectors, most any flop that comes down could be one that has caught up to you. When fired at by these looser players, your instinct will be to raise with big overpairs, and perhaps call with the in between ones, often ending up where you are all in either against a hand that you dominate or has you crushed.

The field then becomes wide open. Each hand where you don’t flop the nuts you are playing on spec to some extent and just have to close your eyes and jump, going by reads and feels against whatever you think your opponent has. Playing small ball online poker at these kinds of games can be nice, if they’ll let you, but you just might be leaving doors open behind you for them to come in and suck you out.

If you aren’t comfortable at a table’s action, it is okay to get up and leave, and play in areas where you have a better idea of what to expect from your opponents. Wild is wild. Remember this when you play poker online.

Two Pair Defined

Filed under: Great Fun, Internet Gambling, World Of Games

Two pair is a five card poker hand that contains two set of two cards of the same rank, along with a fifth unranked card, such as 8 8 9 9 J. Two pair beats one pair and is defeated by three of a kind, straights, flushes, and higher.

The value of two pair is judged first by the rank of the higher of the two pair, and then defers to the value of the second pair. The poker online player with the higher first pair, or of the second pair if the rank of the first are equal, wins. In the event that both players have the same two pair, the player with the highest fifth card, or kicker wins.

Two pair are referred to by their high pair first and their second second, so that Q Q 4 4 would refer to queens over fours, or ‘queens up’ if the second pair is not necessary for showdown.

Top and bottom pair, or top two pair, are other references that one might make in naming the value of their hand, where top two would be more valuable that top and bottom, or bottom two pair.

The probability of being dealt two pairs in a regular poker online hand is 4.75%.

A Clarification on Aggressive Play
Monday November 09th 2009, 11:17 am
Filed under: Great Fun, Internet Gambling, World Of Games

When some people think of aggressive online poker play, they have a hard time differentiating it from the maniacal loose aggressive play that many players adopt. In this article we’re going to try to clear up the difference between loose maniacal play and aggressive play that focuses on tight strategy but is still aggressive.

The whole concept of aggressive poker play is that it is a style that is meant to exert pressure. That’s it. Loose aggressive play exerts pressure on other players. But that doesn’t mean that loose play defines aggressive play. Tight play can also be aggressive and pressure opponents. And from a tight player the pressure is taken even more seriously.

When you catch a hand as a tight player and wish to play it aggressively, you have to take in to account the other things going on at the table. For example. Do you lead out and bet it (you do in early position). Or if you’re in late position, you’d opt to reraise. This is where the pressure aspect comes in.

In an example hand, let’s say you have AK and your opponent holds A9. The flop comes AQ3 rainbow. Your opponent leads out and you have position. Here you apply the pressure by reraising the pot. You have the top pair with the nut kicker. What you want to do is pressure him to decide to a) incorrectly play his hand and chase a 3 outer agains the odds or b) correctly play his hand and fold with a weak ace. Either way, you’re taking control of the pot and thus gaining initiative. And with initiative, you have pot control, and with pot control, you are the one who has the ability to pressure your opponents into making a mistake.

So, to summarize, aggression isn’t about playing loose, unpredictable, and crazy. Instead it’s about putting the pressure on your opponent, whether it be loose or tight. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.

The Poker Dress Code

Poker players are used to thinking of the game in terms of the cards. The cards are, of course, the most important factor that decides whether you win or lose. Some poker online players, however, tend to forget that the poker experience is actually made up of many smaller factors that contribute to how much you actually enjoy playing. You can win all you want based on the cards, but you won’t enjoy the process unless you are comfortable. This brings us to one of the least discussed factors of a good online poker game: the dress code.

The dress code for a poker game has a significant influence on how comfortable you are when you play. It can be very distracting to have to think about the crease in your pants or fiddle with a necktie when you are trying to focus on the game. Your clothes should be the last thing on your mind. One way to get into the most comfortable clothes is to play online poker. If you play poker online you can play in anything you like (even nothing at all if you are so inclined). Online poker is an excellent option for anyone who finds that fancy clothes are a distraction from playing a well thought out poker game.

Building Your Bankroll

Unless you are one of those lucky poker souls who gets bankrolled by an angel (or a trust fund) on your own, you might find yourself in the process of needing to start your online poker funding from a place of little to none. Though the thrill of playing for high stakes is obviously most poker players end goal, the beginnings of a bank roll hold a thrill all their own. It can be quite gratifying to start from very little and making that into a lot. The question is, what is the best way to do so?

There are a variety of answers to this question. Depending on how little your starting point is, you might want to consider playing micro limit poker cash games, of say $.01/$.02 or $.05/$.10, trying to building your stakes hand by hand and set by set. Though it can seem like you are only winning a little bit each time, you are also only risking a little bit each time, and in the long run it adds up.

Others may prefer the small online poker tournament method. Playing small buy in sit n gos and learning to regularly place in them adds to your stack in a slower, but safer way. It’s all up to what you feel more comfortable with risking, and how you are best suited to show up winning most regularly.

Arabian Horses

Arabian horses have become one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Their intelligence, spirit, stamina, and gentle disposition have helped them become increasingly popular; they perform excellently in horse shows and competitive events.

With archeological evidence dating back to at least 4,500 years, Arabian horses are considered one of the oldest horse breeds. They originated from the Middle East and were distributed to different parts of the world because of war and trade. This is the reason why most of the modern breeds have traces of Arabian blood in them.

Arabian horses exhibit a close relationship with humans, a positive aspect that greatly contributes to their good-natured attitude. Arabian horses are also quick to learn and are alert, which makes then the perfect horses for raiding and war. As a matter of fact, these horses were originally used for war purposes because they were able to withstand the harsh conditions of the Arabian desert even when traveling long distances.

Arabian horses’ impressive stamina lends it excellent speed, agility, and gracefulness — the qualities that make the perfect competitive horse.

Arabian horses stand between 14.1 and 15.1 hands tall. Aside from equestrian competitions, they are also good for trail riding and are excellent ranch horses.

Betting and Bluffing with a Pair on Board
Tuesday October 14th 2008, 11:01 am
Filed under: Great Fun, Internet Gambling, World Of Games

When a pair comes on the flop in Texas Holdem, it can often be a cause for attention, in several ways. Say you see a flop like 9 9 K come down. Your opponent checks, you bet your K Q, your opponent raises. So now what? You’ve got to think he has the nine, right? Especially if he was in the blind, or is the kind of player that loves suited connectors, it’s hard not to think that anyone willing to raise you in this spot has flopped trips. Basically then, if you call that bet, and your opponent then continues betting, it can become pretty hard to continue.

This is why, when you have a hand such as the KQ in that spot, you’ve got to proceed very carefully. When deciding whether to bet or bluff with a pair on board, you have to consider all kind of factors about how your opponent would play: is he the kind to check raise the trips? Is he capable of representing them if he doesn’t? Will he smooth call and let you keep betting? Would he draw to a flush or open-ended straight if he thought you had the nine yourself?

A lot of the time betting into this kind of board will win you the pot, because odds are likely that your opponent didn’t flop the set. But also, betting without one can get you nabbed by a more adept opponent who knows you wouldn’t bet if you did have one.

This kind of board is the sort that could go either way, so it helps, in the case of paired boards, to play with extreme caution and sensitivity, especially if you aren’t too familiar with your opponent’s style.
