The ONE Law You Should Be Breaking

There is a law all smart people break.
Parkinson’s law.
Parkinson’s law states that “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” It was first coined by C. Northcote Parkinson in the book Parkinson’s Law: The Pursuit of Progress.
A common derivation of that is “expenses rise to meet your level of income.” Has that happened to you? It happened to me in 1991 and I’m particularly aware that it could happen to me again in 2005.
In 1991 I took my BS in finance and started a carpet cleaning business…like most finance majors, of course! I learned the business for a couple months and was earning a whopping $200-$300 per week working for someone else.
When I left that company and went out on my own, the ad I used FLOODED me with business. I had 15 calls by 10:30AM the day the small ad first ran. The answering service told me every “little old lady in Saratoga was calling”.
So almost immediately I went from making $200-$300 a week to making upwards of $1000 per week.
WOW…23 years old and making that much money WORKING FOR MYSELF was great fun…had a great boss!
I don’t remember what I spent all the money on other than one of those nationwide pagers but my spending
rose dramatically. But guess what? At $7.95 per room for carpet cleaning it doesn’t take a math major to
figure out I was working very hard to earn $1000 a week. So, of course I got tired and lazy and slowed down.
My income level dropped to some level probably near $500 per week but my lifestyle didn’t and you can figure
out the rest.
If, while earning $1000 per week I was living like I made $400-$500 per week I would have been sitting pretty…
or whatever the male equivalent of sitting pretty is! :>)
Recently in a workshop I had a woman relate her story. Her husband had been out of work because of injury for
about a year. They had been living on only her income for that time. Before his injury they had been living on two
incomes and usually had just enough money to meet all their expenses.
The injury had her worried. How could they do it on one income?
Somehow, THEY MADE IT. All the bills were paid on time. They didn’t take any drastic measures like canceling
the cable or pulling apart the 2-ply toilet tissue to get 2 rolls out of every one.
This gal was amazed and tremendously EXCITED because her husband was going back to work soon and she
was going to be able to put a large chunk of one entire income toward eliminating all their debt using my program.
(Do you have it yet?) Two thousand dollars a month put under your mattress or towards paying off a debt is
$24,000 per year or $120,000 after 5 years.
This family was forced to break Parkinson’s law and you see how it dramatically improved their lives. The silver
lining in the cloud.
Don’t be forced to break the law…do it voluntarily starting today. If you are a two-income household pretend
that one of the incomes is now gone. If you are a one-income household advertise for a wealthy widow or
widower and then pretend that your income was slashed in half.
Keep track of every penny you spend…write it down…put it in your Quicken, Microsoft Money or any spreadsheet
program…just get it on paper so you can see it.
Be brutal about it and I’ll bet you can live on half of what you now make. Take the “missing” half and pile it on
your debt. (you know which debt don’t you?)
Break Parkinson’s law and you’ll never be sorry!

Wooden Garden Sheds Don’t Have to Be Too Dear when You Buy On-line and Take Advantage of the Great Selection
There are a good deal of sound reasons why you would want a shed and fortunately there are cheap garden sheds to meet just about every last requirement. Cheap sheds may be purchased just about all over but what you will learn is the price will vary tremendously. You shouldn’t have to give up the shed you want because it is too high-priced though. A garden shed is something you buy once and utilize for years and if you have a look on-line you can obtain garden sheds at some pretty silly prices. I do not mean cheap and silly as in quality but as in cost. You’ll find you can acquire the garden shed you want for the price of the one you were about to settle for much less and if you own a garden that you tend to every day you will most likely require to look into Sheds as a place to place the fertilizer, water hose and tools etc..
Protecting your garden tools and making them easily available is a very good idea. You can find cheap reliable sheds on the internet that are the same sheds you’d buy in the shop. As A Matter Of Fact, you can go to the garden store and shop even spot them to see if it’s what you need then you can go online and purchase it for a lot lower price. The difference in cost is remarkable!
Superb Early Season Snowfalls for Most of the Alps
Climate change and the global downturn, these dual threats have let off the Alps, leastwise for the time being. However it may have been so altogether polar. In the weeks before Xmas villages in the Les Grands Montets locale were cut off as avalanches rained down. Road routes such as the important Col du La Clusaz were shut. At that place there was no power or phones, home owners had to be moved out to pro tem dwellings, it seemed as though it were a repetition of 1997.
It appears that all promotion is good promotion. Le Tour featured nightly on French news bulletins. Immediately mains was fixed reservations began to come in, attracted by the good snowfall.
La Tania and neigboring Isola 2000 claim virtually 5.5 m depth on the upper slopes at 2500 meters altitude and 2.3 m at the base of the pistes. At the moment the best in the French Alps. Chastreix-Sancy states there is five m at the top of the resort. Unfortunately snow drifts have knocked over a pylon of the ski lift that serves the sector. It is out of commission till mid Jan. Elsewhere in the French Alps reservations are up 18% in Avoriaz, Alpe d Huez and Auron. Megeve has 99.4% tenancy and traded a record number of ski passes last Thursday. That is timely for luxury ski resorts and big ski firms.
The “Credit Card Debt Termination” Scam

“Legally terminate credit card debt! You can be debt-free in 4-6 months!” Advertisements like this are for a new type of program that has spread via the Internet over the past few years. It’s called “Credit Card Debt Termination,” and victims are paying $1,000s for this bogus service. One victim I spoke with lost more than $15,000! In this article, I’ll review the principles behind this program and explain exactly why it’s a scam to be avoided.
First, let’s get our definitions straight. The scheme I’m describing here should not be confused with Debt Consolidation or Debt Settlement (also known as Debt Negotiation), both of which are legitimate and ethical methods for debt resolution. The easiest way to distinguish the Credit Card Debt Termination scam from other valid programs is based on the central claim that you really don’t owe any money!
With Debt Consolidation, you pay back all of your debt balances. With Debt Settlement, you pay back a lower amount (usually around 50%) while the creditor agrees to forgive the remaining balance. However, with the bogus Credit Card Debt Termination program, promoters claim that you won’t need to pay anything at all (except their outrageous fees, naturally). They make the surprising claim that you can legally wipe away your debts simply by using their super-duper magic documents. Based on some legal mumbo-jumbo, the claim is made that you really didn’t borrow any money from your creditors!
In order to understand this scam, a little background is necessary. Remember the tax protest movement back in the 1970s? People were claiming that the IRS tax collection system was unconstitutional, and based on their misinterpretation of the tax code, they refused to pay taxes. The IRS came down hard on the tax protest movement, and through the court system, they blew holes in all the legal arguments put forth by the protesters. The Credit Card Debt Termination scam is a lot like the tax protest movement. In fact, among collection professionals, it’s called the “monetary protest movement.”
Just like the tax protest movement, there is a common theme that runs through all of the promotional materials issued by the monetary protestors. The basic idea is that our Federal Reserve monetary system and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) do not permit banks to loan out their own money. Therefore, according to their interpretation, the credit card banks are the ones running the scam on the American public.
Stay with me here, because the logic is pretty strange. If a bank cannot lend its own money, how does a credit card bank extend credit? The claim here is that your credit card agreement itself becomes a form of money (known as a promissory note) the moment you sign it. The idea is that the bank “deposits” your agreement as an asset on their books, and then any credit you use is offset as a liability against that asset. In other words, the core concept here is that you literally borrowed your own money from the credit card bank.
So let’s say your balance with ABC Credit Card Bank is $10,000, which you borrowed against the card to make everyday purchases. The scam promoters say all you need to do is notify the bank that you want your original “deposit” back. However, you will permit the bank to offset the amount you borrowed against the amount you have on “deposit.” Presto! You don’t owe the balance anymore!
Now, as you can imagine, the banks don’t take kindly to such tactics. Many of the consumers using this technique are getting sued by their creditors. But the scammers have more tricks available, as if the “smoke and mirrors” financial nonsense wasn’t enough. One of their techniques is the use of bogus “arbitration” forums. Arbitration is of course a legitimate system that allows businesses and individuals to resolve disputes without going to court. What do the scammers do? They coach people on how to set up a fake arbitration forum, for the express purpose of making a dispute against their creditors! Naturally, the creditors will not send representatives to some non-existent arbitration forum, so the consumer gets to rubber-stamp their own arbitration award. If they get sued in a regular court, they present their bogus award to the judge in the hopes that the creditor’s lawsuit will be dismissed.
There are other techniques used by promoters of this scheme, but the key point to remember is the central claim that your credit card debt does not really exist. Of course, it’s all nonsense based on a misinterpretation of our monetary system, and if you step back and think about for a minute, the truth seems pretty obvious. What these scammers are saying is that the entire $700 billion credit card industry is operating on an illegal basis! Even if the legal theory used by the promoters were true (which it isn’t), do you think for a moment the government would allow this giant industry to go under? That’s exactly what would happen if the promoter’s claims were proven true and used on a widespread basis.
The Federal Trade Commission, which has jurisdiction here, hasn’t stomped on these con artists yet, but it’s only a matter of time. Unfortunately, in the meanwhile, consumers are being bilked out of millions of dollars for a worthless program that will only get them into deep trouble with their creditors. If you are approached by someone offering to wipe away your debts using this system, I strongly recommend you run in the other direction while you hold on tightly to your wallet or purse.
Remember, you can eliminate your debts if you take a disciplined approach to your finances, make a budget and stick to it, and don’t use your credit cards unless you can pay off new balances in full each month.
Good luck in your financial future!

How Do You Spell Debt Relief?
Thursday February 26th 2009, 10:56 am
Of all the problems possible in a marriage, finances cause the most marital discord. Many singles consider finances to be their most worrisome issue. Many times this is due to a heavy debt burden. Several options exist to help people get debt relief from their unsecured debts. (Unsecured debt is not linked with a physical asset. Therefore, credit cards and medical bills are unsecured debts; a car loan or a mortgage are secured debts.)
One option for debt relief is bankruptcy. While unsecured debts are indeed discharged, the long-lasting black mark on your credit report (up to ten years) makes bankruptcy less than ideal as a form of debt relief. Further, changing bankruptcy laws will make it more difficult to file. Bankruptcy should only be a last resort. It is not a quick fix.
Another option is debt consolidation. Debt consolidation combines your existing loans into one loan. While this does away with late fees and over-the-limit fees, very little is done to reduce the amount of debt or to renegotiate interest rates. Further, this uses something as collateral, such as your house. If you still have trouble paying, you could lose your house to foreclosure.
A third option of debt relief is debt settlement. The debt settlement company negotiates with credit card companies to agree to settle for a lesser amount owed, often pennies on the dollar, of both the interest and the principle. A debt settlement company also acts as the middleman between the debtor and the credit card companies, eliminating phone calls that border on harassment. A downside to debt settlement is that many debt settlement companies advise you to stop paying your monthly bills altogether in order to force credit card companies into settlement. While this may work for some credit cards, others may be just as likely to take you to court for non-payment, and debt settlement companies take no responsibility for such action.
A fourth option for debt relief is through credit counseling services. This is similar to debt consolidation in that you pay only one bill to the counseling service. They in turn take over all your debt payments. The benefit of this is that any communication with the creditors is handled by the counseling service. The downside is that credit counseling services work primarily for the credit card companies. While they may work for a reduction of interest, they probably won’t work for a reduction of principle.
No matter which option you choose for debt relief, all are better than doing nothing and falling further and further behind. Check out all your options before making a decision.

Choosing a Cell Phone
If Alexander Graham Bell were alive today he would be amazed. It wasn’t that long ago when he made the first telephone call to his assistant from another room in his laboratory. At the time they had been working on a device to help deaf people hear. Bell patented the telephone in 1876. Now, 130 years later, people are walking around with tiny but powerful computers held to their years. These wireless devices can be used to browse the Internet, play games, text message, manage schedules… and even to use a telephone!
Question: I am looking to buy a phone but I don’t know which plan to get
There are many plans available if you would like to buy cell phone. The best way to figure it which plan is right for you is to buy a pre-paid phone before you make a decision and commit to any long-term plans offered by cell phone companies. The prepaid plan lets you put a certain amount of money toward telephone usage and you can use your cell phone for as long as you have money available.
This is a great first option because many people who are first looking into getting a cell phone are not sure about when they would typically use it. Having a prepaid phone lets you sample your usage and get a good idea about the times of the day and the days of the week you make calls on your cell phone.
For the first month or so that you have a prepaid plan, you’ll want to keep an eye on these four things, which will help you determine which cell phone plan you’ll eventually want:
What time of the day to you make most of your calls?
How long do your phone calls last?
What days of the week do you make most of your calls?
Are they local or long distance calls?
Where do you use the phone most often? (for example, if you travel or just around town)
Once you have used up your prepaid amounts, you’ll probably have a good idea about your calling profile and this will help you accurately select a play.
Having a cell phone is a highly convenient tool to stay in touch. Having information to make a wise purchase will help you get a cell phone and a cell phone plan that provides the best value to you.

What’s New with Cellphone Cameras
Mobile telephones have progressed a long way from their humble beginnings as the analog “bricks” of the 80’s as technology has offered increasingly more complex features and options. Once no more than just a phone, now the average new cellphone has more on-board processing power than the combined computing power used to land men on the moon. Miniaturization, modern programming, and constantly improving technology driven on by a hungry market means that the cellphones of today are not just a phone, or even an organizer, but instead, they are a centralized multimedia platform. They offer many of the same advanced features as a PDA, like Bluetooth, flash card compatibility, radio, and fully featured integrated digital cameras. Much like the cameras found on PDAs, the digital photography offered by multimedia phones is not brilliant, but rather better suited to casual photography of friends at opportune moments. The advantage of having an integrated cell-camera is that as a phone is something that people tend to always carry with them, they will always have a camera handy.
If high quality digital photography is what you’re after, then you’re better off buying a mobile phone and camera separately. While camera technology is getting there for things like PDAs and mobiles, the range of advanced options for a cell phone camera don’t even translate to the standard set of features for a basic digital camera. A comparison of some prominent models on the market today follows, giving consideration to the cost, feature set, and level of quality offered by each device.
The Palm Treo 650 Smartphone runs the Palm OS version 5.4 on a 312MHz Intel CPU. It has 23MB of user memory available, expandable with the addition of either an SD or MMC flash cards. The display is a 320×320 pixel 16-bit color TFT, and it features a 0.3MP digital camera, capable of taking photos or capturing video. Feature wise, it’s impressive, but doesn’t weigh up against similar products for the price. The camera in particular is under-powered for the amount of processing behind it. A Smartphone 650 will set you back about $550.
The Sony Ericsson W800i has 32MB of user memory, and comes free with a 512MB Memory Stick Pro flash card. Featuring a display resolution of 176×220 pixels, and a 2 MP digital camera, it is fairly light on the features, and would be best described as a basic high-end mobile phone. The 2MP digital camera goes some way towards justifying the cost, but it doesn’t compare to buying a digital camera separately. The W800i will set you back around $480.
The Nokia 7610 is a competitive entry on this list, featuring a fairly rich feature set by comparison to the other examples. However, it has only 8MB on-board memory, expandable via a MultiMediaCard flash card. It comes with a free 64MB MMC, with a 176×208 display in 16-bit color. The 1MP digital camera supports a very wide range of image formats, as well as two modes of video in low or medium resolution. It supports multiple video formats, has a 4x digital zoom. The Bluetooth enabled system itself has a web browser and email client. The main problems with this phone are the relatively short lived battery, and the small amount of on-board memory. But at just $310, the feature set gives this phone serious bang for the buck.
If we compare each of these to a normal digital camera, it is easy to see why they are not a good choice if you intend to focus on photography. $350 gets you a Canon SD500 7.1 MP digital camera. It features 3x optical zoom, along with 4x digital zoom, Television AV/out port, proper strobe flash with red-eye reduction, heavily customizable setup, optional automatic lighting conditions compensation, a tripod mount point, full motion video recorded at effective resolution of 0.3MP. It has an SD card slot, and a host of other features too numerous to name. This is not an elite, professional grade camera, however it outperforms every camera phone listed by at least 3:1. and at a lower cost too.
Cellphones have evolved to a point where they more closely resemble a laptop than anything else, combining a truly impressive range of multimedia technologies into one tiny device. Displays are improving rapidly, as is the level of functionality offered by modern mobile phones. As they become more numerous, these features will become increasingly useful as vast networks of people, all armed with such versatile devices will begin to take shape. As of now, however, they are fairly unfocused in their capabilities, offering a very wide range of features, but not delivering any one of them so well as to replace the technology from which the features first came from. While camera cellphones can have their uses, they still do not lend themselves well to high quality photography. For casual use with friends, or general purpose use, a camera phone can be a lot of fun, and while it combines a lot of devices into one convenient package, it doesn’t deliver the a high level of quality.

Shopping for a Laptop
Shopping for a laptop is overwhelming because of the numerous choices. No one can tell you what you need or don’t need, except maybe your spouse, parent, kid, local geek, or know-it-all who knows you. But it’s still good to know a few things about buying a laptop. An educated customer is a happy customer, right?
Most important question when starting this research: do you need a laptop? If you need a combo desktop / laptop, you can get a laptop with a docking station.
A common question is whether or not to get one with wireless. The question to you — are you going to use it? Will you have places to wirelessly connect with? Remember, when you have a wireless laptop, it has to connect to a hub or Wi-Fi (like Starbucks or a cell phone). Some hotels are starting to set up wireless and others requiring plugging in. If you buy a laptop without wireless and change your mind, you can add it later with a card. Only difference is it won’t be built-in. Not a big deal. Mine is not built-in.
FYI: Most laptops come with a 10/100 Ethernet NIC built-in.
For me, I have a cheap dial-up account with a national service. Good thing because I used it in the hospital. Not every place has wireless or free wireless (Starbucks isn’t free, or at least, not all locations from what I understand). So before I travel, I look up the service’s local numbers of where I am going so I’ll have them.
As for what model — you’ll get different answers from everyone. People love and hate Dells. Love and hate IBMs. What makes Dell different is that you can pick and choose what items you want on your laptop. IBM has a good reputation. Of course, Macs are nice, if you want to go the Apple way. Buying a refurbished laptop is cool. We have two of them in our house and we’re happy with ‘em. Saved a bit of money, too.
Screen. Picking the right screen is based on graphical need. I got a nice wide one, but my laptop be heavy, dude. I don’t travel much, so weight isn’t an issue. When I do travel, the weight of the laptop isn’t a big deal because I benefit from the video memory more than the weight.
The video card is built into the motherboard, just like a lot of desktops. What you have to watch with a laptop is make sure you get the video you want. If you are going to use graphic intensive programs, then go for more video memory. In the past laptops were not geared toward graphic intense applications. Then the DVD came along and changed that.
A screen is not as replaceable to interchangeable like a harddrive, a wireless card, or a DVD drive. I invest more in the screen so it lasts longer since everything else can be upgraded or replaced.
How often do you plan to lug it around? Believe me. No matter how light the laptop feels, it’s a bag of bricks when you’ve walked with it all day at a conference. That’s why I have a backpack case for my laptop. Much easier for long treks with the laptop. So weight didn’t get a priority with me.
A laptop is useless without an operating system and software. Before we get into details. There is a snag. If you are buying from a major reseller (IBM, Dell, HP, Compaq, etc.) It is going to come with an operating system, whether you like it or not. This is due to their licencing agreements with Microsoft. If this is not an issue, here are the considerations.
Do you want it to come with it or do you have licensed software you can load on it? When buying a computer with the operating system and bonus software, remember you don’t get books or separate CDs loaded with the applications. Some companies provide CDs for using when you have to reformat a computer and these programs will load back up. Some people don’t like this and prefer to buy the applications separately.
This is a suggested process for shopping for a laptop:
- Decide what you must have and write those down.
- Search for products that have these things.
- Search for and read reviews on the finalists.
- Narrow down the list as much as possible (one to three items) to the ones you will be happy with buying.
- Comparison shop for the best offer.
